FAQ
What is Form 1120?
Form 1120, U.S. Corporation Income Tax Return, is the annual federal income tax return for domestic C corporations. It reports the corporation's income, gains, losses, deductions, and credits and figures how much income tax the corporation owes.
Which businesses file Form 1120?
Domestic corporations generally file it, including LLCs that have elected to be taxed as corporations, unless they're required to file a special return. S corporations use Form 1120-S instead, and other entities, like foreign corporations, have their own versions of the form.
When is Form 1120 due?
For calendar-year corporations, Form 1120 is generally due April 15. Fiscal-year corporations usually file by the 15th day of the fourth month after their tax year ends, but check the current instructions for exceptions. Form 7004 gets you an automatic six-month extension to file, but not to pay any tax owed.
What schedules are part of Form 1120?
The form includes Schedule C (dividends, inclusions, and special deductions), Schedule J (tax computation and payment), Schedule K (other information), Schedule L (balance sheets per books), Schedule M-1 (reconciling book income with income on the return), and Schedule M-2 (retained earnings). Larger corporations may need Schedule M-3 instead of M-1, while some smaller ones can skip Schedules L, M-1, and M-2.
How do I fill out Form 1120?
Begin with the corporation's name, address, EIN, date incorporated, and total assets, and check any boxes that apply, such as a consolidated return or a name or address change. The income section covers gross receipts, cost of goods sold, dividends, interest, and rents. The deductions section lists items like officer compensation, salaries, repairs, taxes, interest, and depreciation.
From there, figure taxable income, use Schedule J to compute the tax, and complete the remaining schedules. An authorized officer signs the return.
Does Jotform file Form 1120 for me?
No. Jotform lets you fill out Form 1120 online for free and download the completed PDF. You or your tax professional still file the return with the IRS, and some corporations are required to file electronically, so check the current instructions.
