FAQ
What is Form 8880?
Form 8880, Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions, is how you claim the Saver's Credit. The credit is worth 50%, 20%, or 10% of up to $2,000 in eligible contributions per person ($4,000 if married filing jointly), depending on your income and filing status.
Who qualifies for the Saver's Credit?
You generally need to be at least 18, not a full-time student, and not claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. Your adjusted gross income also has to be under a limit that depends on your filing status. Those income limits change every year, so check the current Form 8880 before you file.
Which contributions count toward the credit?
Contributions to a traditional or Roth IRA, elective deferrals to a 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457(b), SIMPLE, or SARSEP plan, and certain other plan contributions can count. So can contributions to an ABLE account by the designated beneficiary. Rollover contributions don't count, and certain distributions you received can reduce the amount you're allowed to use.
How do I fill out Form 8880?
On lines 1 and 2, enter your IRA and ABLE contributions and your elective deferrals to workplace plans, with separate columns for you and your spouse. Line 4 subtracts certain distributions you took, and line 6 caps each person's amount at $2,000.
Next, enter your adjusted gross income, find your credit rate in the table on the form, and multiply. The credit is then limited by your tax, and the final amount goes on Schedule 3 of Form 1040.
Is the Saver's Credit refundable?
No. The Saver's Credit can lower the tax you owe, but it can't create a refund on its own. Keep in mind that the SECURE 2.0 Act is set to replace this credit with a Saver's Match starting with 2027 contributions, so check the IRS website for updates in future years.
Can I download my Form 8880 after filling it out?
Yes. Jotform lets you fill out Form 8880 online and download the completed PDF for free. You can then attach it to your paper return or use it as a reference while filing.
