FAQ
What is Form 1099-G?
Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments, reports money paid by a federal, state, or local government. The most common amounts are unemployment compensation and state or local income tax refunds, credits, or offsets. It also covers things like taxable grants, agricultural payments, RTAA payments, and market gain on certain loans.
Who sends Form 1099-G?
Government units and agencies that made reportable payments send Form 1099-G to the recipient and file a copy with the IRS. If you received unemployment benefits or a state tax refund, you'll usually get one from your state agency, often available to download from its website.
Is a state tax refund on Form 1099-G taxable?
It depends. A state or local refund in box 2 is generally only taxable if you itemized deductions and deducted state and local income taxes in the year the refund relates to. If you took the standard deduction that year, it usually isn't taxable. Unemployment compensation in box 1 is generally taxable income.
How do I fill out Form 1099-G?
Enter the payer's name, address, and TIN, then the recipient's TIN, name, and address, plus an account number if you use one. Report unemployment compensation in box 1, state or local refunds, credits, or offsets in box 2, the tax year of that refund in box 3, and any federal income tax withheld in box 4.
Use the remaining boxes for other payment types, like RTAA payments, taxable grants, or agriculture payments, and complete the state boxes if you withheld state tax.
When is Form 1099-G due?
Recipients should generally get Form 1099-G by January 31. The filing deadline for the IRS copy depends on whether you file on paper or electronically, and paper filers include Form 1096. Also, the IRS doesn't accept Copy A printed from its website because it isn't scannable. Check the current general instructions for information returns for exact dates and e-filing requirements.
Is Jotform's Form 1099-G generator free?
Yes. You can fill out Form 1099-G online and download the finished PDF for free. Jotform doesn't file anything with the IRS, so filing and furnishing copies to recipients is up to you.
