FAQ
What is Form 8283?
Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions, is used to report donations of property rather than cash, such as clothing, household goods, vehicles, securities, real estate, or collectibles. You file it with your tax return when you claim a deduction for these donations.
When do I need to file Form 8283?
Individuals generally need Form 8283 when their total deduction for all noncash gifts is more than $500 for the year. Partnerships and corporations may need to file it too. If you itemize, it goes with your Form 1040 and Schedule A.
What's the difference between Section A and Section B?
Section A is for items (or groups of similar items) worth $5,000 or less, plus publicly traded securities even if they're worth more. Section B is for items or groups of similar items worth more than $5,000. Section B usually requires a qualified appraisal, a signed declaration from the appraiser, and an acknowledgment signed by the charity.
How do I fill out Form 8283?
In Section A, list each donation with the charity's name and address, a description of the property, the date you gave it, when and how you got it, what you paid for it, its fair market value, and how you determined that value.
If you have items over $5,000, complete Section B instead: describe the property, answer the questions about partial interests or restrictions if they apply, and get the appraiser's and charity's signatures in the declaration and acknowledgment parts.
Do I need extra documents for a car donation?
Usually, yes. If you donate a vehicle, boat, or airplane and claim more than $500, you generally need the written acknowledgment the charity gives you, often Form 1098-C, and you attach it to your return. Some high-value donations also require attaching the appraisal itself. The Form 8283 instructions explain when that applies.
Is the Form 8283 generator free?
Yes. You can fill out Form 8283 on Jotform and download the PDF without paying anything. You'll still need to collect any required signatures and file the form with your return.
