FAQ
What is Form 1040-X?
Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, is used to correct a Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR you've already filed. You might need it if you left out income, claimed the wrong filing status, missed a deduction or credit, or need to add or remove a dependent.
When shouldn't I file Form 1040-X?
You usually don't need to amend for simple math errors, since the IRS typically corrects those itself. The same goes for a missing schedule or form, because the IRS will generally ask you for it. If you haven't filed your original return yet, just file a corrected original instead.
How long do I have to file an amended return?
To claim a refund, you generally have to file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you filed the original return, or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. File a separate Form 1040-X for each year you're amending.
How do I fill out Form 1040-X?
Enter the tax year you're amending, your personal details, and your filing status. For each line that changes, fill in three columns: Column A for the amount on your original return (or as previously adjusted), Column B for the increase or decrease, and Column C for the corrected amount.
Complete Part I if you're changing the number of dependents, and use Part II to explain what you're changing and why. Attach any new or changed forms and schedules, then sign and date the return.
How long does it take the IRS to process Form 1040-X?
Amended returns take longer than original returns. The IRS says processing can take up to 16 weeks, and sometimes longer. You can check your status with the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tool, usually starting about 3 weeks after you file.
Is my information safe when I fill out Form 1040-X on Jotform?
Yes. Jotform uses 256-bit SSL encryption and offers optional encrypted forms. You can fill out Form 1040-X and download the completed PDF for free, then sign it and file it with the IRS yourself.
