FAQ
What is Form 8949?
Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets, is where you list individual sales and exchanges of capital assets like stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, and digital assets. It lets you reconcile what your broker reported with what you report to the IRS, and the totals then go on Schedule D (Form 1040).
What's the difference between Part I and Part II?
Part I is for short-term transactions, generally assets you held for one year or less. Part II is for long-term transactions, assets you held for more than one year. Long-term gains are usually taxed at lower rates than short-term gains, so putting each sale in the right part matters.
Which checkbox should I use on Form 8949?
Each part has checkboxes that tell the IRS how the sale was reported to you. Your choice depends on whether you received a Form 1099-B (or Form 1099-DA for digital assets) and whether it shows that your cost basis was reported to the IRS. Use a separate Form 8949 page for each box you check.
Do I always need to file Form 8949?
Not always. If your broker reported your basis to the IRS and you don't need to make any adjustments, you may be able to report those totals directly on Schedule D. Check the current Schedule D instructions to see whether that exception applies to you.
How do I fill out Form 8949?
For each sale, enter a description of the property (for example, 100 shares of XYZ Co.), the date you acquired it, the date you sold it, the proceeds, and your cost or other basis. If an adjustment is needed, such as a disallowed wash sale loss, enter the code in column (f) and the amount in column (g).
Column (h) shows the gain or loss for each line. Total the columns at the bottom of each part and carry those totals to the matching lines on Schedule D.
