Dwolla: Recurring Payment option - Can a client pick a day of the month to pay?

  • angliaadvisors
Asked on November 30, 2016 at 2:47 PM

I note than on the new recurring payment form (I am integrated with Dwolla), there is no option to select a date each month for the payment to be drawn. Is this option available and I have just not been able to find it? If not, do I assume that it will draw the money on the 1st of whatever the next upcoming month is and then on the 1st of each month thereafter?

UPDATE: Unfortunately, Dwolla is discontinuing its product as of October 2018. But if you’re looking for an alternative to collect ACH payments through your forms, you can check out other great alternatives here.

Yes, that's correct if your subscription period is set monthly. The user will be charged on the payment date and it will auto-renew on the same date in the following month.

If you want users not to be charged right away after a period of time, the Trial Period option will do.

Oh, disappointing. I would like everybody's payment to go out on the 1st of each month, regardless of what date they sign up. Also, using a variable amount, I get locked out of the trial period option. Any suggestions?

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I am forwarding this issue to our developers. Once they have a solution, you will be notified via this thread.

    Thanks.

    Please do.

This is a total deal-breaker for me and I am sure many others too. This feature (the client being able to select a payment date) was available under Dwolla's old system so it is clearly not a technical problem from their end.

I contacted Dwolla this morning and had to inform them that I have no choice but to suspend use of their payment system with my clients due to the lack of availability of this option on JotForm.

Thank you for your feedback, I see my colleague has already forwarded the concern to our developers. However, cannot provide a time frame as this depends on our developers current work load and the feasibility of the feature.

    @angliaadvisors

We are in the process of implementing this feature but we need a few more information from our users.

It is to our understanding that the charging date should be strictly followed.

For example, if the charging date is 8th of each month and the form was submitted on the 9th, the first charge will be initiated on the 8th of the following month.

Charging date: 8th day of the month
    Current date: Dec 9
    First charge: January 8

Now if the interval of subscription is bi-monthly (2 months), the first charge will be initiated on the 8th two months after the current month.

Charging date: 8th day of the month
    Current date: Dec 9
    First charge: February 8

Does this make sense to you? If not, can you please propose to us how this feature should work?

No that is not the system a lot of us need.

What is needed is that it doesn't matter what the set up (initial charge) date is. What we need is the ability to see a drop down menu with #1 thru #31 and the ability to determine what day of the month the recurring charge comes out every month.

For example, if it is the 10th of February, the client should have the ability to select, say, the 25th of February as the first charge date and thereafter on the 25th of every month.

If it is the 10th of February and the client picks, say, the 3rd, then the first payment will go out on March 3rd and the 3rd of every month thereafter.

This was available on Dwolla and is common on many payment websites.

In your initial request you stated "I would like everybody's payment to go out on the 1st of each month, regardless of what date they sign up".  This is different from "if it is the 10th of February, the client should have the ability to select, say, the 25th of February as the first charge date and thereafter on the 25th of every month".

My colleagues proposal was inline with your original request that all users be billed on the same date regardless of when they sign up.  Can you clarify which process is correct?

First process, user signs up and no matter when they sign up, all users will be billed on the same date.

For example, if the charging date is 8th of each month and the form was submitted on the 9th, the first charge will be initiated on the 8th of the following month.

Or, for the second example, users would sign up, select their billing date and then would be billed on that date and on that date every month thereafter.

Both scenarios would cause variable subscriptions lengths due to the number of days in each month, which is something to consider.  Rather than a 30 days period or a defined period, some months users would receive an extra or fewer days in their subscription.

Sorry if i didn't make it clear in my initial response.

My personal preference would be for the clients to be able to select the 1st of each month to make their recurring payments, regardless of what day of the month it is that they sign up. But that is just me.

I did not see any suggestion from your colleague that easily accommodated that request (the "trial period" is not a viable solution), unless I misinterpreted a response.

Other users may like the payments to be regularly made on a different date each month (every 10th, 15th, 20th, whatever).

The broad request is that regardless of what date they sign up, the client can choose the date on which each month that the payment is made going forward. In other words, that the ongoing payment date is not tied to the date of the month that they first sign up.

Re: the various lengths of each month, the choice could perhaps be restricted to dates 1 through 28 (consistent for all 12 months), or an extra option of "last day of each month" could be added. Of course, it is understandable and accepted that this would lead to slightly variable time periods between each payment as months have different lengths.

The consistency of a payment date is of much greater importance (since it is often tied in to salary payment dates which are on consistent 1st of every month, 15th etc.) than the time period between payments being exactly the same every time.

Thank you for the clarification.  A developer has been assigned to look into the feasibility of adding this feature.  If there are any updates, we will let you know via this thread.

    Hi,

We have just added this feature. Option to select charging day are now available for Monthly and Weekly recurring payments.

Feel free to test it and let us know any comments you might have.

    Best,

Thank you guys for your prompt attention to this.

Just to confirm it is me as a vendor that gets to select the charging day, not the client (since I see that the option to select does not appear on the client-facing form, just within the wizard)?

For me, this is perfectly fine - but maybe others would like to give their clients the option to select.

You are correct.  The option to set the date is only available in the payment field options during setup, it is not available for users to select within their forms.  The way it is set up now, all users would be billed on the date of your choosing, rather than their choosing.

Very welcome.  There is another request to allow users to set their own date in this thread here:

OK, this still is a problem .. I set up the form and tested in with a client who got error messages. I followed up with Dwolla, re-connected with them and still it didn't work.

Dwolla sent me the following email today ..

    Dwolla Support
    DEC 21, 2016  |  09:53AM CST
    Good morning-

Thanks for your message. That error message is generated by an issue on JotForm's integration that was fixed about 2 weeks ago. Originally, JotForm created their application using Dwolla's old API. After we rolled out the new version, they updated their application to coincide with the new API, but the recurring payment option of their application was still referring to Dwolla's old API. That was causing the error message you are seeing which is to alert the application developer that they are calling the incorrect API code. When the issue was discovered, we let JotForm know and they updated that section of the application to the new version of the API which fixed the issue.

Your best resource for this issue is going to be JotForm's support team. It could be something as simple as recreating the form now that the fix has been deployed. JotForm's support team will be able to let you know what steps to take to get that issue resolved for your form.

    Sincerely,
    Dwolla Support

Please advise, this is slowly becoming infuriating! ..

Do you happen to know what the error messages were?  It would be most helpful in diagnosing what the problem is.  Our Dwolla integration should be working at this time.

I shared this with Dwolla, who responded ..

    Hello,

Thank you for sending in the screen shot of the error message. Our developer has looked into the issue and found you don't have the proper redirect URL and scopes enabled.

Please follow the link below to JotForm's help article (specifically steps 8-10) and double-check your application within Dwolla and see if you have the proper OAuth Redirect URL and scopes selected.

    Sincerely,

I went to that link and followed the direction accurately and completely. It was after that that a client trialed a recurring payment (https://form.jotform.com/63343620618150) which continued to generate the error message

Have you checked all your settings?  If the redirect URL still has not been updated, it will continue to produce the invalid client configuration error.  Please revert https://www.jotform.com/api/dwolla/complete.php as your Dwolla application's OAuth redirect URL.
