can I link a certain image to the previous line, depending on the choices made?

You can link image to question with help of JotForm features!Try following steps.
Let's assume you have Drowdown Properties in your form.
1.Write Options of your Dropdown.(For this example Banana and Apple).
2.Add photos which you want to link your question.You can add link from advances image properties(Link Image).
3.You have to add 3 conditions which you can see in the below
1.Condition is If dropdown is empty hide all photos you have.
2. Condition is If choosen dropdown option is apple hide banana and show apple.
3. Condition is If choosen dropdown option is banana hide apple and show banan.
