    Geolocate the IP address of a form's submission

    Asked by rockviewlodge on September 25, 2012 at 01:59 PM

    Any way to append the {IP} field with the city/country of that IP address? Am sure it cannot be deemed 100% precise, but even a loose estimate would be quite helpful for our purposes.

    Rationale: Google Analytics obviously shows us where our website visitors are coming from, but we are tracking which places most commonly use our contact forms. Our audience is global, so we also want to customize our replies in subtle and not-so-subtle ways to appeal to the respondent's language and norms (for example, using US or UK style english) without having to require another field in the form.

    Would be great to merge in a {location} type of field in our notification email which delivers something like "Denver, Colorado" or "London, UK". Super-bonus would be a little google map pinpointing the estimated location in case it is a place name that might not be immediatley familiar to our South American staff.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mark,

    Unfortunately, we still don't have an update about this request. Just to let you know that our developers are working hard to accomodate every users request but everything comes with priorities so your patience on this matter is highly appreciated.

    We will be updating you on this thread as soon as we get any updates from our developers.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    All of a sudden I've been asked by two market research companies whether they could capture the geolocation of the form submission... very useful they say.

    Can I request this feature please?

    I think its possible that a user has to opt in ??

    Thanks, Mark

    I think it should be possible in case if our geolocation feature will be based on the HTML5 Geolocation API.

    I am going to add a comment to the feature request ticket. Thank you.

    @instantes,

    As mention on the other thread, we have your vote noted. This thread is already added to our Feature Request list and hopefully, our developers can add this in future.

    Hi Mark,

    While we do not have updates as of the moment, perhaps this workaround might help. You can use the following link appended with the ip tag {ip} on your form notification so it creates a clicklable link that would display all the IP details like Geolocation Information & Geolocation Map provided by whatismyipaddress.com

    http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/{ip}

    Example Result: http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/83.163.23.228

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the heads up on that

    @EltonCris

    That's a great bit of thinking actually.

    One flaw if I may ;-)

    The geolocation is particularly useful for mobile and smartphone use.

    The method you propose would not actually stamp the users geolocation of submission would it?

    The result would constantly change with the person moving around.

    Anyway one could stamp the location at point of submission.

    Thanks, Regards Mark

    Hi Mark,

    I think the IP wouldn't change when they go around. Because once they submit the data, their IP is already recorded but unless you have included the Edit Function on your form auto responder then they re-submit while they are on different location.

    Just my thoughts.

    Thanks

    If the user's IP address is added to a link that goes to the whatsmyipaddress website ... then whenever a person clicks that link the geolocation will be updated as to where the smartphone is ... surely?

    Am I misunderstanding something here ... or does the geolocation feature at whatsmyipaddress just stay fixed the first time an IP address is recorded ....

    Are you sure you've thought this through Welvin?

    What's the Edit function stuff got to do with it ... wer'e talking one submission and an IP address related to a geolocation ... and I'm saying that geolocation is subject to change because it depends on whatsmyipadress's website

    Thanks mark

    Hi Mark,

    ...or does the geolocation feature at whatsmyipaddress just stay fixed the first time an IP address is recorded ....

    -The IP Address is already recorded on the Link Provided by the URL: http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/{ip}. So, this is correct.

    With regards to the Edit Function. What I mean is this;

    They are able to change the data once they are given a way to edit their submissions. Once they submitted the edited data on other location, the IP Address will also get changed.

    Thanks

    Welvin ... the IP address is not the issue.

    That will stay fixed ... the problem is that the location can change from the place of submission and you as the market researcher would be non the wiser!!

    The issue is that the person could do a submission in Texas.

    Let's say they then get a plane to New York ... and you check the submission at the exact time they are in New York .... what will happen?

    The whatsmyipaddess will tie up the IP address with NY won't it ... because that's where the IP address is when you click the link e.g. http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/83.163.23.228

    Do you see where I'm coming from?

    Hi Mark,

    IP is taken from the user's current IP who submitted the form. Once it's captured, it can't be changed on your submissions data anymore. So, even if the user moves to different locations or even if he intentionally changed his Dynamic IP while on the same location, it wont affect the first IP that was captured and submitted to your form. Also, what ever entered IP after the whatismyipaddress.com/ip/ it will remain as it is. Is this what you mean? Thanks!

    I think I'm confusing the fact that a smartphone has a unique IP address ... and that it is this that is recorded... and that it stays the same wherever the smartphone goes.

    But thinking about ... I'm obviously a bumbling idiot who hasn't the vaguest idea how anything works ...

    Is it correct that the IP address of smartphones is either via the cell that it is in ... or the local wifi network it is connected to .... yeah?

    Clarification would be good ... I'll have a look myself too.

    Hi Mark,

    To my knowledge, it's actually both. Depending on what type of network you are using to connect to the internet.

    1. If you're using Wifi network, your IP depends on the IP address from the Wifi you are connected to. Example: I've connected my phone to my wifi. The screen below shows the IP address provided by my ISP that's used on my Wifi.

    2. If you are using Sim Card with GPRS enabled when connecting to internet, a different global IP will be assigned to your phone depending on the sim card network provider. You can check that when you open, whatismyip.com. I am not sure though if the assigned IP is static, probably that depends on the network provider.

    Hope this helps. Thank you!

    I'm sorry, what I mean is it's either from this two depending on what network you used to connect to the internet. :)

    Mark, we understand that you are eager to have this but unfortunately there's no updates about this as of the moment. Our developers will usually reply to the thread once the requested feature is released. You can use the provided workaround as for now.

    Also, this is a somewhat like an effortful feature so this won't likely be implemented in a short period of time. Our dev team has their list on what's next thing to do and if they see many request on a single feature they will usually start to work on it right away. Just take note, this is still in the request list so if there's any progress, we're sure to address it to you.

    Thanks!
