My auto-response email is constantly losing it's formatting, no matter what I try

I've cut and pasted dozens of attempts to put in auto response email text and I know that the text is not starting out with formating problems. I'm conversant with this software and have had zero problems like this in the past but it is changing the formatting (some wide paragraphs, some narrow, some long lines, some narrow, etc). every time. Very frustrating. Please help me. 

When copying text from a different source, paste it using Ctrl+Shift+V (windows) or Option+Shift+Command+V (mac) keys to exclude its original formatting. Or paste the text first into Notepad or any Text editing tool you may have to erase its formatting before pasting it to the email template.

After that, use the formatting tools in the Email template editor.
