Google spreadsheet column names are so long

Asked by johnboscocamp on January 30, 2013 at 01:03 PM

I searched the forum, but can't find a similar question.

Is it possible to make the column names used in the Google spreadsheet integration any shorter? Some of our questions are very long. Using the question as the column name makes the spreadsheet really clunky, especially if the answer to the question is a simple yes or no. It seems like a minor thing, but for the end users of the spreadsheets, it is making buy-in to our new system very difficult. Is there ANY way that we can use something other than the question as the column name?

    Thanks
    Tracy

    Hi Tracy,

I'm a fellow jotform user and might be able to make suggestions.

Are you able to show one of your form that I can clone and see what you have up there? There could be nice workaround for your use case and that will be apparent if one sees how you build your form.

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Unfortunately, this is not possible at the moment.
Perhaps there may be a workaround for this.  Can you please share the URL of the form in question?

We'll be glad to look into it for you!

BTW @adamsmeat, thanks for you help!

    Thank you SO MUCH!

This is a clone of last year's form which we are looking to improve. We do have a lot of improvements in mind already that are not reflected here, but it is the issue of the field names being very long that we would really like to figure out.

I thought maybe there was a clever way to give a field a better short field name (under Properties > Field Details > Name)  that could then be used in the spreadsheet instead of the acutal questions. Wishful thinking I guess :)

Thanks so much for looking into it, I would love to hear any suggestions!

    @johnboscocamp

Hi, I can see the issue here since the integrated spreadsheet will only mapped to the form's field  labels/questions. As of this time, there is no means to change that using the form builder.

I will submit a request ticket to our next level support team using your suggestion as basis to have means of shortening the mapped fields labels to the spreadsheet column names.

It will still be subjected for approval and when approved, we can only wait for the time when it will be implemented/devloped. So, I am not promising anything here. =)

For the meantime, to help your end users experience on the spreadsheet -- you can instead use a copy of the original jotform spreadsheet data to another spreadsheet, which you will then let your end users use.

You can do this by linking the spreadsheets thru import range command (see google guide here) -- so, your spreadsheet #2 should only contain your own header/column name, while you only import the data from the jotform integrated spreadsheet.

Hope this help. Inform us should you require further assistance.

    Thanks.
