Testing the e-signature a lot you'll notice ;-)
It needs either the option to add a hint or a sub-label. Personally I think the sub-label is in the wrong place to provide instruction .. but a hint I feel is perfect. Why? You could add your own phrased instruction e.g. use your finger to draw your signature. If you're not happy press clear at bottom of box.
When I've tested it with people a couple have said "how do I add the signature then?"
Thanks, leave it with you
This is a re-post of a comment on Announcing E-Signatures for Forms

Hi Mark and thank you for the feedback about our eSignature Field. I will go ahead and forward your suggestions for improvements to the field directly to our Development Team. 80)
- markashtonAnswered on February 22, 2013 at 09:51 AM
Can you change the thread title to the title of the original post made on this: Feature Request: E-Signature Requires Hint ... or whatever it was.
This one's nonsense
- KadeJMAnswered on February 22, 2013 at 09:53 AM
Yes and that is understandable so that it makes more sense.
- JotForm SupportmdikiciAnswered on February 23, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Hover text added as builder option, thanks for the feedback.
- markashtonAnswered on February 23, 2013 at 01:13 PM
I'm grateful for the speed of development but .... you've got to be kidding? This is probably the daftest thing I've ever seen on Jotform ;-)
Hover text on an e-signature is about as much use as a plane ticket is to Oscar Pistorius.
99% of the use case for an e-signature is for use on mobile devices .. smartphones & tablets. Tell me... when one is using a touch screen how does a user activate the hover function? They don't! It's impossible.
For a laugh I tried it anyway -doesn't pop-up even when you touch the screen to do your signature ... and if it did it would get in the way... so would be counter-productive...
Seriously though, where in my post did I request or mention "hover text"? I clearly state in the title (of all things) FEATURE REQUEST: eSignature Hint and Sublabel ...
Would you be most kind as to replace the useless hover text function with the totally appropriate "Hint Function"
Hint is what is required ... people can see the instruction clearly ... at the right time ... it doesn't take up any space ... on the space challenged mobile device ... perfect
I would be most grateful for this implementation
Kind regards Mark
- moonzkieAnswered on February 23, 2013 at 01:57 PM
We apologize for the confusion for the "hint function". I will forward this request again to our developers so they can look into it and hopefully implement this as well.
- markashtonAnswered on February 23, 2013 at 02:22 PM
Respectfully, you don't have to apologise for the 'confusion'.
There isn't any confusion ... this is a clear lack of attention (to the most basic) of detail.... and without any vision as to how the function is used in the real world
It's like ordering coffee and someone delivering you Hot Chocolate!
What I would say is that it is a complete waste of engineering time and that it has required me to reiterate an already "totally clear" requirement.
You state "implement this as well". Personally I'd remove the hover function entirely. Why? Mobile forms are created to a 320px width . The hover function will get in the way of the signing area ... and it can't sit to the side because there just isn't the space.
I'd remove this and pop in a "hint" and the lesser useful sub-label
- JotForm SupportWelvinAnswered on February 23, 2013 at 07:57 PM
If you could share us the form URL, we will help you align the Hover Text for the e-Signature Field. We can also adjust how the Hover looks to fit your needs.
All of this by injecting custom CSS codes to your form. We can help you with anything for as long as it is possible.
Furthermore, are you referring to the same function as Tooltip: http://jqueryui.com/tooltip/ ?
- markashtonAnswered on February 24, 2013 at 09:30 AM
Have you been on the crack pipe again?
That has to be the most ridiculous answer I have ever read on jotform! And there's me thinking your colleague @mdikici had won that award above
How does what you state above have any significance to what I am talking about ... ?
Which part of my last post asks the question "How do I move and resize the hover function?"
Am I totally wasting my time here?
Let me make it real simple in bullet points....
I NEVER ASKED FOR THE HOVER FUNCTION .... EVER
THE TITLE OF THE THREAD IS "FEATURE REQUEST: E-SIGNATURE HINT & SUB-LABEL
THE HOVER FUNCTION IS USELESS ON E-SIGNATURE BECAUSE PEOPLE USE THEIR FINGERS ON MOBILE DEVICES
LET'S NOT WASTE ANOTHER MINUTE TALKING ABOUT HOVER
FINALLY... CAN SOMEONE ACTUALLY READ WHAT I SAY PLEASE AND INTERPRET IT CORRECTLY?
I'd be most grateful
- KadeJMAnswered on February 24, 2013 at 11:51 AM
Mark, if I am not mistaken and based on your first interest which started this thread to prompt an improvement to the eSignature Field I think this is more of what you are looking for to be added to the field. Can you please confirm if this is more of what you were looking for so we can add them?
- markashtonAnswered on February 24, 2013 at 04:43 PM
The Hint would operate just like the "Hint Example" on the Text area function.
I've done a little demo here of how I visualise it: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/30546644945966
Obviously I've used text field as an example ... but it would be the signature field
When the person touches the canvas with their finger ... the hint will disappear ... just like it does with the text area when you begin to write text.
The sub-label would be useful to have a message like ... Please click the link opposite if you are unhappy with your signature
- JotForm SupportjonathanAnswered on February 24, 2013 at 04:50 PM
Thank you for the details Mark.
Your recent response is already relayed to the developer.
- JotForm SupportmdikiciAnswered on February 25, 2013 at 08:25 AM
Just to inform you; I put sublabel option and planning to implement hint like you mentioned soon
- markashtonAnswered on February 25, 2013 at 08:43 AM
Tested the sub-label ... works but do you think it needs to be further up and wrap before it gets to the "Clear" link? it looks too far away ?
Check this: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/30535800785960
- JotForm SupportmdikiciAnswered on February 25, 2013 at 09:26 AM
I think you are right. Check
- markashtonAnswered on February 25, 2013 at 09:33 AM
That's great. Just one thing ....
Has the long sentence pushed the Clear Link down?
I'm just wondering whether it will look right with a short sub-label sentence ... and the Clear link ... further down the page ...
You know what though ... I might be just being too pedantic.
let's roll with that ... good work ... thanks for heads-up on all this.
I think the "Hint Example" will be the most pratcical and useful ... but the sub-label option is a good addition too
- JotForm SupportEduardoMendezAnswered on February 25, 2013 at 10:48 AM
Here is a clone of @mdikici's form:
The only difference is the theme of the form. The last theme made it difficult to spot the clear link, however, it is there.
I hope this helps!
- markashtonAnswered on February 25, 2013 at 04:39 PM
I think the 'Clear' link needs to be bigger and moved up flush with the box.
I think the sub-label should wrap before the end of the box.
See this demo ... Ihave used a
tag to do it but most people won't know
EDIT: Actually the link size is fine ... needs to stay in the same place when sub-label added and the sub-label should wrap before ... my opinion ;-)
- markashtonAnswered on February 26, 2013 at 12:42 PM
Are you going to implement the hint?
- markashtonAnswered on March 04, 2013 at 06:29 AM
My initial request here was to implement the hint function on the new e-signature while the iron was hot.
What got implemented was the "not asked for" hover which is nigh on useless.
Secondly, the much less useful .. the sublabel - easy to miss as the signature box is large was implemented ... what I noticed in testing was that people weren't seeing it.... too far down
The hint far more valuable seems to have floundered ... my instincts tell me this.
So, here's the thing ... with all the massive loads of work Jotform has to do ... why implement two "not asked for" functions that are both contentious in their value ... that could be construed as a waste of engineering resource ... and actually not implement the asked for function that with a little thought one can see is the right move.
It's like me asking you to paint my room white ... you paint it blue ... and then go off into the sunrise.
Any chance the hint function can be implemented so that I can use it?
- JotForm SupportEduardoMendezAnswered on March 04, 2013 at 08:33 AM
We appreciate the requests and feedback from our users. It is this constructive input that fuels the improvements to our builder.
To clarify the situation, your request for the hint function was received and submitted to our dev team. The ticket remains open and has been assigned to one of our developpers. It has been set as "important" in priority and they will be updating this thread as soon as there is news on this matter.
We assure you that the fact that other requests/features may be implemented before the one that you had originally requested does not mean that our dev team has "gone off into the sunset" with regards to this feature.
Please kindly stand by for updates.
- markashtonAnswered on August 18, 2013 at 02:48 PM
I'm still standing by?
I think the space in the canvas could be well utilised by having a hint function - a good place for advisory.
The hover text has been implemented which is useless for smartphone signatures as they are touchscreen
- JotForm SupportjonathanAnswered on August 18, 2013 at 05:00 PM
Currently, the ticket for the feature request is still open. So, it is in the works.
I know that you understand that I cannot mention any ETA for this since I also don't know.
But rest assure that your latest message have reached our dev team.
When our dev have new updates available, they will surely post on this thread.
Thank you for understanding.
