Field alignment: how to place fields side by side?

I want to place fields side by side on a form.  Every time I try to move a field to the right of another, it just toggles one on top of the other.  Why does a field have to take up the whole width of the form?

You have the option to use the function "Shrink" from the form field properties, which will enable the fields to appear side by side.
