    HTML & Grid Reports - Thumbnail Pop-up Needs To Be Correct Orientation

    Hi,

    Some genius has integrated the thumbnail popup in reports. This is a great feature. So thanks

    However, the thumbnail popup is often/nearly always the wrong orientation ... ruining its good intention and value for the most part as you have to crick your neck to see any of them!

    Now ... the filepicker image is always the correct orientation. This is because the filepicker service handles EXIF data that advises on the orientation of the photo ... important with smartphone photos sa they could be any way up.

    Now I'm not sure whether this is the EXIF data thing but it happens with all your thumbnails regardless of upload type - default upload filepicker upload, whatever ;-)

    But I note that all thumbnails are in a landscape box ... which will be restrictive for portrait photos ... take a look at the thumbnails on this report ... http://www.jotform.com/table/31884686333060  Yep ... that's a landscape box whether it be a portrait photo or landscape.

    So is this a factor affecting image display orientation?

    In any case can I request that portrait photos be shown in a portrait thumbnail box and landscape photos in a landscape thumbnail box

    Hi guys ... now we have pop-ups in both reports - we need to get the orientation correct.

    All thumbnail pop-ups are displayed landscape regardless of whether photo was portrait or landscape.

    See the thumbnail on report and then click to see image in new window - can you see they are not consistent i.e. thumbnail is incorrect: http://www.jotform.com/grid/32005060010024

    I believe there may be an exif problem too as highlighted above.

    Hi,

    I am wondering whether the orientation problems are simply a consequence of the fact that the thumbnail generated is always in landscape mode. Of course, a portrait mode picture would either be compressed to fit the space ... which doesn't seem to be the case ... or displayed in the wrong orientation as landscape.

    So, in a nutshell ... I believe that making portrait images load in a portrait thumbnail ... and landscape in a landscape thumbnail ... will correct the orientation problem.

    If not ... then the problem is EXIF data-related ... but as Filepicker handles this element I would be surprised if there was an image orientation problem once the above was implemented

    Hi,

    I have been advised in another thread that the orientation problem is fixed. 

    I have tested the claim that the orientation in reports has been fixed and can confirm this is not the case ... 

    This report on my machine shows all thumbnails in incorrect orientation i.e. horizontal when should be vertical: http://www.jotform.com/grid/32034912049044

    It looks like the problem is EXIF related

    Hi,

    I have done a stack load of testing and fantastically the solution to our problem is so godam easy ... remember we are talking photos taken with smartphones here (nearly all)

    Check the orientation of this filepicker url in Internet Explorer:

    Now check the orientation of this filepicker url in Internet Explorer... with just the height amended:

    Orientation corrected .... all our problems are solved applying the append convert thing.

    So, specifically ... for the thumbnail pop-up we need to reference the filepicker url ... but by using the convert command for whatever the height of the thumbnail is:

    Can this be applied to the filepicker images please ... I bet they will all be the correct orientation in pop-ups then on both the html and grid reports ... job done

    Doing this tremendously small bit of engineering will result in every user of a grid report seeing their thumbnails the correct way up on any device.

    Would you be kind enough to consider doing it ... I'd be very grateful ... The solution is above ... and came about in a Eureka moment

    The only thing you have to do to get the thumbnail showing the correct way up is to add this to the filepicker image ...

    convert?rotate=exif

    Try IE ... check both ... see the difference

    Mark, I can see what you're talking about for this and thank you for pointing that out. I think we're already aware of the orientation issue from previous threads. I feel confident that our Developers will more then likely have this fixed before long.

    Update: with the new features added to embed image directly to the grid/table report instead of a link. Orientation can now be auto-corrected. But it only works for filepicker links at the moment. We will update you again once all images in the report will be able to get the same functionality.

    Great stuff.

    The orientation for filepicker images ... as embedded thumbnails ... seems to be totally correct.

    I will let you know by this thread if I find any problem with orientation with filepicker images in html/grid reports ...

    Just testing orientation in all browsers ..

    All thumbnails are correct in every browser ... this is becuase you have applied the filepicker convert command to the url that defines the thumbnail.

    However, the full size photo that is hyperlinked into a new window is the wrong orientation in every browser but Chrome ...

    Check this in IE, FF, Safari (on PC) .... wrong orientation ...

    Fix is easy .... need to append the following to the hyperlinked url .... /convert?rotate-exif

    Check this in IE, FF, Safari ... correct prientation ...

    This cures any problem with orientation for filepicker ... sorry I didn't spot earlier ... I use Chrome which is the only browser that displays the main filepicker url with correct orientation.

    Hi Ken,

    I see no change at all. Tell me .... did you test the changes?

    A simple test ... this grid report link ... http://www.jotform.com/grid/32284830423046

    Check in all browsers ... only Chrome corrects the full-size image ... all other browsers ... No.

    I note that the hyperlinked image is still the same .... it requires the ... convert?rotate=exif ... to be appended to the image url ... and it will work.

    Of course mark, I'm not going to tell you I have made something if I did not test it. Thats not a good practice.

    Did you recreate your reports? Or did you try to resubmit to your form( that one can also help to recreate your report ).

    Seems to works fine on my end though, I have the links with 'rotate' parameters.
    Anyway I did reupdate our servers hopes it reflects now from your end.

    Ok  ... this is a disaster I was worried about happening. However, there is a solution ...

    I've got projects out in the field ... and I now have compaints that the thumbnails are not the correct orientation!!

    This is project data for Unilever ... and they have contacted me advising that the thumbnails are the incorrect orientation ... and could I change it back to what it was.

    I have checked all other grid reports and the same problem exists.

    Jotform grid reports no longer show photo thumbnails correctly orientated that have been uploaded by filepicker

    I'm not opening another thread ... because this shows how much effort I put unto getting this going in the first place !!

    Solution to problem ....

    Take a thumbnail currently:

    It lacks the exif data neccessary to correct the orientation of the photo??

    Solution as follows ...

    The following needs to be added to the code at the end of the string: &rotate=exif

    Can this be done asap please ... this is all that needs to be added ... and the problem is sorted

    Please try if the changes works on your end. You might need to recreate your reports or make a new submission for the reports to be updated.

    Yeah ... actually you don't need to recreate reports ... just a couple of browser refreshes seem to do the trick.
