Jotform Emails: Pre-population links with long URLs not working

I am trying to pass the input of a single choice field from one form to another using URL parameter. However, it is appending a space to the end of the answer. For example,

I have repeatedly checked that there is no whitespace in the defined options.

This is an example of the question:

    1616220404_605590f449876_Screen Shot 202

However, the URL parameter comes out like this: 47OT1=Yes%20

Clearly the space ('%20') means that it doesn't pass properly to the next form.

I don't suppose that there is any way that Jotform can remove whitespace. This should be a core feature.

There is another circumstance, where it is appending a space before the URL parameter.

From the below example, if you do text search for '49OT1' you will see that there is a space before the URL parameter is defined....

So, in summary, Jotform seemingly appends a blank space before and after a single choice option without reason..

It makes passing a form field for a single choice field with URL parameters impossible...

Why does Jotform put those spaces in?

Hello Darcy! I don't see any issues with passing values to the single choice fields via URL parameters. I notcied that you're preparing these URLs in the autoresponders of your forms. I checked this form: https://www.jotform.com/form/210478327723053 by cloning it into my account and by making a test submission. The generated URL didn't have any space character for '49OT1' parameter; I received this: 49OT1=Yes as a part of the URL in my autoresponder.

The screenshot that you pasted is actually the label text' it is not the input text value.

Am I looking at the right form?

If not, then please correct me. We'll re-look into this.

    Awaiting your response.

    Thank you!

    Hello,

It is happening on a couple of my forms, for example in sending the email from 210760570521043 to 210741251963856.

The URL being sent in the autoresponder email can be found here.

If you do a search text on that URL you will find that parameter 520OT4 is being messed up a space. Specifically, it looks like this: &5%2020OT4=Com

That space messes up my whole form, and it happens on several examples.

Hi Darcy! I checked again at my end but couldn't replicate the problem. Then I check the email logs and found this email: https://www.jotform.com/emails/605964443030611ee44f6c17

I believe this is the one that you just sent in your previous reply. The link in this email doesn't have the '520OT4' variable broken.

The generated link URL is as follows:

Maybe the problem is with your email client. Can you check this?

Also, you can yourself check what emails Jotform is sending you by using these instructions.

    Hello,

    I have found another example.

If you do a search text on the URL, you will see that the URL parameter has added a space in the value:

    &46S1=N%20o

Again, this messes up the flow of our forms

    I found another example.

    47%20S1=Yes

I have checked the email logs as you mentioned, and in the email the URL is working fine. So I could be that I need to upgrade my email client from Jotform to SendGrid (or something similar)?

Hello! On further checking, I've noticed that there is a problem. There is no problem with the form or your logic to create these links but when these links reach the email client, the links don't work as intended. I am able to replicate this on my hotmail address and gmail address..

Please allow me some more time to run a few tests; I'll get back to you soon.

    Thank you!

Hello! The problem is that extra whitespace characters are being entered in the URL path; this results in breaking the URL at several points.

It is not the form logic that is putting in these extra characters. The problem could be with the email clients or our email service.

It seems that there is a limit of around 1000 characters per line in the email content; and thus the link breaks if this limit is crossed.

I am not very sure what is causing this; so I'm escalating this to the Backend team; if this is identified as a bug, this will be worked upon.

If this isn't a bug and is some kind of limitation; we'll let you know that as well.

This is the issue screencat: http://shots.jotform.com/patrick/Screencast%202021-03-23%2018-47-51.webm

You may try using your own SMTP; it might help if this is email server related issue.

Also, it seems that you have a workflow here; we usually recommend creating email based workflows; if you implement it; there won't be any need to pass these URLs in emails.

Guide to create workflows with detailed example: a-general-approach-on-building-an-approval-process-workflow

I hope this helps. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Thank you for bringing this to our notice.

    Hi Patrick,

Thank you for escalating the issue.

First, in relation to the characters per line, I raised the potential issue here. Obviously the above URL will not work on IE, but that isn't an issue for us. So, I think that, as you said, the issue is likely with the email client rather than the browser.

Second, in relation to workflow, we decided not to use Jotform workflows because we needed all the form submissions collated into a final PDF. As a way to achieve that end, we are using URL parameters. Is there is a way for Jotform workflows to achieve that goal?

Yes, regarding the character limit support by browsers; on modern browsers including MS Edge, the character limit is now much higher. But on IE, this URL character limit of ~2048 characters is still in effect.

    Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your response. Yes, this form doesn't need to support IE - so that 2,048 character limit is not applicable!

Hello! Darcy! The pre-population character limit link issue has been escalated but there is no update on this.

Kindly note that we cannot provide any ETA on this. But I'll leave a message for the concerned team to look into it.

    Thank you!

I've noticed that is even happens on relatively short URLs (approx 1,000 characters). Such as this example

If you do a search text for:

    &2%0D3S2=

Hello Darcy! Thank you for your findings, the same has already been escalated. The problem is that after a specific number of characters (that is around 1000); a white space is being entered in the URL that results in breaking of the URL.

    Thank you!

    Hi Patrick,

I'm not sure that it is after a specific number. Sometimes, it works fine with 6,000 characters.

If it was as simple as 1,000 character limit, then Jotform should include in their documentation that they have this limitation. Instead, Jotform support recently said the limit much higher than 1,000 characters.

I found another example here where it occurs at the 698th character. So, perhaps isn't a specific character count issue.

However, assuming it is a 1000 character limit issue, Jotform needs to encode their emails properly.

Hi Darcy! I'll leave a message for the concerned team to look into this. They'll get back to you if there is any update.

But this seems to be a mail server limit; check this link: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4738160/workaround-for-the-990-character-limitation-for-email-mailservers

"Note that mailservers have a 990-character limit on each line contained within an email message. If an email message is sent that contains lines longer than 990-characters, those lines will be subdivided by additional line ending characters, which can cause corruption in the email message, particularly for HTML content. To prevent this from occurring, add your own line-ending characters at appropriate locations within the email message to ensure that no lines are longer than 990 characters."

Thank you for your understanding in advance.

So, just to clarify, Jotform does not use any form off URL encoding in it's emails??

Jotform isn't breaking any characters in the URL. These are being cut at the mail server end.

If you access the generated links from the logs directly, those links don't have these extra spaces but if you access the same links from the mail client, the spacing is there.

    Check this screencast: http://shots.jotform.com/patrick/Screencast%202021-03-23%2018-47-51.webm

You should be able to test this limit manually a well by sending a test email with this long URL. See if the sent URL breaks.

    Thank you!
