Can I populate a subsequent question with a previous field answer and other space saving options

Asked by smeplanner on January 20, 2014 at 09:28 AM

    For instance...

At the top of the form, I ask for "attendee" name and also for "guest" name.

Later in the form, an activity has to be selected, such as spa day, golf, etc. for each one them.

    1)  Can I populate a field in the activity section with either the attendee and/or guest name if available?

There may be a better way, but this is a long form, and each person gets to choose their own activity.

Plus each activity will have additional options... such as which activity at the spa... etc.

    2) I made the form fairly wide, but having a little trouble aligning things next to each other. Are there tricks to this?

    3) I would also be interested in using the form collapse option and wondering if that is where my next heading should go, and if use TWO form collapses... do the settings need to be a little different between the two?

My goal is to make the subsequent output easy to follow for the event planner.

    thanks,

    Christine

Thank you for contacting us. I have looked into your form and I see what you mean.

    1)  Can I populate a field in the activity section with either the attendee and/or guest name if available?

I am afraid that you cannot populate a drop-down field right value based on a textbox selection. Is Whenever if someone fills Attendee Name then it will automatically select Attendee name or Guest/Spouse name if Guest/Spouse Name is filled. Is this what you meant?

Unfortuantely, that can not be done via the Form builder, you need to use the form source code of the form and create a custom script to check whether which names are field and automatically select the right "Activity Selection For"

On contrary, you can however fill or copy textbox to textbox by copying the value via "Calculate Fields"

Is this what you want to do? Please let us know. Thank you

    Ok, understood…

Another question then… I like what you did with the drop down…( or I can do radio button or checkbox… I don’t really care… )

The main question is… how to offer the Activity Selection (and the subsequent conditional logic for that section) to follow for both Attendee and a Guest (if there is one)…

Do I have to duplicate the Activity Selection section for both the Attendee and then the Guest…? Or what would be best way?

Hello Christine.  You can add a Condition and show only the fields related to Guest whenever he/she chooses that she is bringing in a Guest.

I can see that you have updated your form and added a choice using radio button if they will bring a guest/spouse then the name pops up if Yes.

It think this approach is correct. You can do the same by showing all the guest/spouse related fields when "Yes" is chosen. You can modify your current condition. I can see that you have already added 3 of them.

Then add the rest of the Guest-related fields.

Please see this demo form. You can clone the demo form by following this guide How to Clone an Embedded Form from a Webpage?. If you need further help, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you

Oh thnx, that is helpful, as I was adding each one at a time. I will look at yours further.

    However, I keep getting a 505 internal error as I’m working…

Plus, when there is NO GUEST … when you get to the Member Activity selection area, it is displaying two of the Guest options… even though I went back and said to hide them.
(guest spa options and guest therapist options)

Actually… looking at yours again… although it looks more straightforward, some of those items also have logic associated with them… so not sure your approach will work.

For instance, the guest only sees the spa choices IF they select Spa Day… and only the Massage choices after they select Massage vs Facials vs Wraps… (two steps…)…

How do you get it to NOT display certain things?
The logic is not quite working for me correctly. Should you have to tell it to hide things?

For instance, for Member… even if I pick Spa… it is still showing HANDICAP and golf stuff.
It also shows the correct options, however…. Such as Massage choices, etc.

Also… would a drop down be better? It seems it is defaulting to a radio button choice even though I have not selected anything when building the form.

Looking at your demo… it is having similar issues.

Maybe I need to create a separate “section” for Member activities…
And then a separate section for Guest Activities.

    Hello Christine,

Creating multiple show hide condition for the same field will be troublesome. There is a better way of organizing your conditions which will help you show hide multiple fields based on one single condition. This guide should help you: http://www.jotform.com/help/196-How-to-Hide-or-Show-Multiple-Fields-at-Once-Based-On-a-Single-Conditional-Entry

The idea is to add multiple form collapse and move fields related to one condition in one form collapse. Then you can create one condition to show hide this form collapse which will in turn show hide all fields which is inside that collapse field.

Do try this and get back to us if you have any questions.

    Thank you!

I’m closer, but still having some small issues with some items displaying when they shouldn’t.

Can you look at my form again please?

I did add another form collapse… and I tried to follow your demo more or less… but I’m missing something.

    Thanks… http://form.jotform.us/form/40193714428151?

Actually it is all working EXCEPT in the MEMBER Activity area… that is where I’m having issues.

Could it be something else affecting it? The form collapse settings or something in the wrong sequence or a mistake in logic I’m missing?

    No it isn’t… L

You are selecting Desert River Float Excursion, and it is displaying Member Body Therapies below it… which is part of the Spa Choices…

The ONLY time the spa choices, such as Massage, Facials, and Wraps, plus THERAPY choice (male/female) should display is when you select the first item (SPA TREATMENT)

The issue is related to enabled Autofill feature on the form. It is saving your previous selection, so that the field is showing up even if you switch to another option.

In order to fix this we can add extra rules to your conditions:

    1)

    2)

    3)

OK… can I simply turn OFF Autofill instead?

that seems easiest and not sure why, or how, or where I enabled it…

    Hi Christine,

Please see this guide. In a nutshell, select Disabled in the Autofill wizard and save the change.

Should you need firther help with this, do let us know.
