I am not sure why the submission email alert do not get sent to my inbox. I provided a email address firstname.lastname@example.org in my profile.

Profile email address is different from the form email notification.
In order to receive the form submissions you need to define the recipient email in the email notification:

Yes, just enter your email separated by a comma on the recipient email box.
