Geolocation Widget Bug: default map location is New York City for some users not located there

Asked by Aaardvaark on December 27, 2014 at 08:01 AM
    b) defaults to New York instead of around Canberra as it used to.  This is unacceptable for a Canberra birding group.

    Hi,

In the form builder, the Geolocation widget default map is New York. But as soon as the form is loaded outside the form builder, the geolocation widget automatically detects the user's location based on the device IP. For example, I have viewed your form to your website: http://canberrabirds.org.au/incidental-record-form/:

As you could see, my location is correct. My IP is based in Manila, Philippines.

    Thanks

Actually, I'm in Barbados and it's defaulting to New York on my end too:

The demo jotform at the Geolocation widget's page is exhibiting the same issues (slow loading and defaulting to New York).

Not sure what's going on but I've submitted a ticket about the default to New York behavior here. My colleague has already submitted a ticket on the slow loading issue. They may be connected.

    Thanks

I'm having the same problem on my site - map is very slow to load and defaults to NY:

    Hi kelseymccutcheon,

I do apologize for the issue that you are experiencing with this widget. I have moved your post to a new thread so that a separate ticket can be created: http://www.jotform.com/answers/489715

Any update on the issue will be provided on that thread.

    Thank you.

    Any result on this?

    Two observations:

1---The two issues of NY default and long delay to get the map are related AFAICS.  EIher both occur or neither.

2---The problem seems to be intermittent.  It was working fine yesterday when I looked but not today, both issues now apparent again.

The connection logically might be that the thing that determines a user's location is broken.  Presumably it tries for a while and when it can't access the location (after long delay) it falls back to the NY map.

Why do you keep raising new tickets so it's hard to keep track or know where to look?  There's one problem, now three tickets/threads, it's unnecessarily complex.  ABove says updates will be provided on new ticket, will they also be provided here?

    Hi,

The submitted ticket with regards to having New York as always the location by the widget was now assigned to one of our developer to check on.

We will notify you here once we have fixed on the issue.

Using the embedded jotform on your website, I was also able to reproduced the issue.

Why do you keep raising new tickets so it's hard to keep track or know where to look?  There's one problem, now three tickets/threads, it's unnecessarily complex.  ABove says updates will be provided on new ticket, will they also be provided here?

As mentioned, this ticket will be updated also and you will be notified about it.

It is necessary to isolate bug/glitch and create ticket for each user who encounter the issue because it may vary a lot depending on the user who encountered the issue.

We create tickets for each because we want to cover each user and attend to them specifically.

The dev assigned with the ticket and who fixes the issue will always update each individual ticket.

Hope this clarifies the matter. Please let us know if there is more we can assist you with.

    Thanks.

    Thanks I understand.

Developer please note, it might be important for diagnosis that the problem is INTERMITTENT.  I've had success getting my local map twice since reporting the problem, and failure (getting New York map after a long delay) five times.

Please try to fix this asap.  It is not just a nuisance, it is severely affecting my users' confidence in jotforms, I'm getting feedback to say they don't bother any more because of this problem.  eg

"The map was set on New York. I didn’t even bother trying to use it."

Jotform is getting a bit of a bad reputation here for this and earlier issues, and this is making my life as administrator difficult.

Also - while looking at this widget, it would be GREATLY improved if there was a means of knowing that people actually used it to set Lat Long.  On our form using the widget is optional becuse people who survey using a GPS prefer to enter coords directly. Even if it is compulsory to use the widget, it's not clear whether the user actually remembered to set the widget location. The default (when it works) is meaningful for mobile devices used on the spot, but not for our users who mostly report from desktops after the event.

    This could be improved by:

    - Put NOTHING into the lat/long boxes until a user moves the teardrop or clicks "use this location", ALSO, then allow the form designer to access those boxes with alternative inputs if necessary.

Otherwise the ability to drag location is almost useless because you are never sure if the user did drag appropriately or forgot.

ONe more thought - I don't know how the widget determines locations for desktop computers, I guess by IP address?  Maybe the widget is working for phones and tablets with location services but not for other computers?

    Hi,

I apologize for the inconvenience that this is causing you. And we appreciate all the inputs you shared and patience that you have.

Upon checking the bug ticket, it has already been assigned to one of our back end team and is working on it already. You suggestions here will be noted and will reach him as an additional information that may help in fixing the bug.

It's quite hard to get the current location of a computer especially with IP alone for some are using proxy IP addresses and some ISPs are setting up some kind of dynamic IP. I would like to suggest if using this widget GPS Location widget together with the Geolocation, makes or at least helps on detecting the possible location of the user when using a desktop computer. Although, in my end I'm still experiencing the slow loading of the map and defaulting in New York. You can check the cloned form that I have here if there's any change in your end: http://www.jotform.com/form/50063795482965.

    Kind regards.

    Thanks for your response.

1---your link to the cloned form is not working, can you fix please as I'd like to see it very much.

2---the alternative widget that you suggest works fine and picks up my location by IP quickly and roughly correctly.  But it is not suitable for my form because it does not have satellite view, is too small, and has associated fields that don't work for me. (we need satellite view because most users are out in the bush, away from roads and other map detail).

Although I realise it can be hard to get a computer's location, the original widget worked fine for a year before suddenly not working on my computer and all my users' computers in December.  The alternative widget still works fine in the same computer today. So it must be possible to get it working again.

    Thanks again.

We have had this issue for awhile on our JotForm.

Now have face a new problem though... Here is an example of what we receive when people fill out our jotform.

The New York issue seemed to correct itself or it was fixed?  Now, we Geolocation does not matter it seems because this always shows up once the form is submitted.  It used to work fine for us.

Also, the Geolocation does not have a Satellite view that we can switch to anymore.  It only shows the roads.
