Is there any way to limit the number of characters that can be used in a message.[Problem: There is a mentally challenged individual who is spamming our church--sending messages with pages and pages of text. A character limit would really help!]

If you are allowing respondents to enter a message via a text box, you can limit the number of characters.
In edit mode, place your cursor in the text box area.
click on the settings wheel - top right hand corner of the area you are working in.
scroll down to show properties - click
the fourth setting you can use limits the number of characters.
choose a number and fingers crossed - problem solved.
unless of course I didn't understand your question properly in which case my response is probably way off the mark.

Do you mean to say that you want to restrict the number of character user can input in textarea of your form? Yes it is possible to achieve your requirement by setting the "Maximum Entry Limit" attribute of textarea field. Please check the screenshot below how to set the "Maximum Entry Limit":
Hope this helps.
