Can I take customers credit card details via Jotform/Braintree without actually taking a payment? As security against damaged goods etc?
Yes it is possible to achieve your requirement. You can enable the "Authorization Only" property of your braintree payment question. Please check the screenshot below:
This will capture the user's credit card detail and create a customer in your braintree account with transaction status as "Authorized". You may charge the customer anytime from your braintree merchant account. Please check the screenshot below:

Thanks for your speedy response. How does this differ from just making a handwritten note of the customer's card deatils? Does it test the card details to make sure they are valid?
It is not possible to collect credit card information on normal text-box fields as this is considered phishing. With our payment processors nobody has access to the credit card details. They are only stored on the payment processor. Like this the customer is always protected. In order to approve the payment you need to enter the payment processor's account and manually approve the payment.
