FAQ
What is Form 7203?
Form 7203, S Corporation Shareholder Stock and Debt Basis Limitations, helps shareholders figure their basis in an S corporation's stock and in any loans they've made directly to the corporation.
Your basis decides how much of the corporation's losses and deductions you can claim, and whether distributions you receive are taxable.
Who needs to file Form 7203?
You generally need to attach Form 7203 to your return if you're an S corporation shareholder and you claim a deduction for your share of an S corporation loss, receive a non-dividend distribution, dispose of stock, or receive a loan repayment from the S corporation.
Even in years when it isn't required, many shareholders fill it out anyway to keep an accurate running record of their basis.
What are the three parts of Form 7203?
Part I figures your stock basis, starting with your basis at the beginning of the year and adjusting it for contributions, income, distributions, and nondeductible expenses. Part II covers debt basis for loans you personally made to the S corporation. Part III shows how much of your losses and deductions are allowed based on your stock and debt basis.
Do I need a separate Form 7203 for each S corporation?
Yes. If you own stock in more than one S corporation, complete a separate Form 7203 for each one. Keep the Schedule K-1 from each company handy, since most of the income, loss, and deduction amounts come from it.
How do I fill out Form 7203?
At the top, enter your name, identifying number, the S corporation's name and employer identification number, and the stock block if the instructions call for one. In Part I, start with your stock basis at the beginning of the year, add capital contributions and your share of income, then subtract distributions and nondeductible expenses.
In Part II, list each loan you made to the corporation and figure your debt basis. In Part III, enter your share of losses and deductions from Schedule K-1 and figure how much you can claim this year and how much carries forward.
Is it free to fill out Form 7203 with Jotform?
Yes, the Form 7203 generator is free. Fill in your figures, download the PDF, and attach it to your return or send it to your preparer. Jotform doesn't file anything with the IRS, so double-check your numbers before you file.
