FAQ
What is Schedule C?
Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship), is where you report income and expenses from a business you run as a sole proprietor. Your net profit or loss carries over to your Form 1040 through Schedule 1.
Who files Schedule C?
Sole proprietors, independent contractors, freelancers, and gig workers generally file Schedule C. Single-member LLCs that haven't elected to be taxed as a corporation usually file it too, as do statutory employees reporting their wages and expenses.
If you run more than one business, you'll need a separate Schedule C for each.
Do I pay self-employment tax on my Schedule C profit?
Often, yes. If your net earnings from self-employment reach the minimum set by the IRS, you'll figure Social Security and Medicare tax on Schedule SE using your Schedule C profit. Check the current instructions for the threshold.
What expenses can I deduct on Schedule C?
Part II lists common business expenses, such as advertising, car and truck expenses, contract labor, insurance, office expenses, rent, supplies, travel, and utilities. Expenses that don't fit a listed category go in Part V.
Generally, an expense needs to be both ordinary and necessary for your business to be deductible.
How do I fill out Schedule C?
At the top, enter your principal business or profession, business code, business name, EIN if you have one, business address, and accounting method. In Part I, report your gross receipts and other business income. In Part II, list your business expenses.
If you sell products, figure your cost of goods sold in Part III. Complete Part IV if you're claiming car or truck expenses and aren't required to file Form 4562, and use Part V to list any other expenses.
