FAQ
What is Form 8027?
Form 8027, Employer's Annual Information Return of Tip Income and Allocated Tips, reports a food or beverage establishment's gross receipts, charged tips and the tips employees reported. The IRS uses it to check whether tips are being reported accurately.
If reported tips come in below the required percentage of gross receipts (generally 8%, or a lower rate the IRS has approved), the form also shows how the shortfall is allocated among employees.
Which businesses have to file Form 8027?
You generally file Form 8027 if you operate a large food or beverage establishment where food or drinks are consumed on the premises, tipping is customary, and you normally employed more than 10 employees on a typical business day during the prior year.
Fast food counters and other places where tipping isn't customary usually don't need to file. The instructions include a worksheet to help you figure out whether you meet the employee test.
When is Form 8027 due?
Form 8027 is an annual return. Paper filers generally have until the last day of February of the following year, and electronic filers get until March 31. Many employers are required to file electronically, so check the current instructions for the filing requirements and deadlines that apply to you.
Do I need a separate Form 8027 for each location?
Yes. Each large food or beverage establishment files its own Form 8027. If you file more than one on paper, you'll also send Form 8027-T, the transmittal that summarizes the returns you're submitting.
How do I fill out Form 8027?
First, enter the establishment's name, address, EIN and establishment number, then check the box that describes the type of establishment. Next, report total charged tips, total charge receipts, and any service charges you distributed to employees.
After that, enter the tips reported by indirectly and directly tipped employees and the total gross receipts from food and beverage sales. Finish with the allocation lines if reported tips fell short, the number of directly tipped employees, and your signature.
Can I download my Form 8027 as a PDF?
Yes. When you finish, Jotform turns your answers into a PDF in the official IRS format that you can save or print. Keep in mind that Jotform doesn't file the return for you, so you'll still need to submit it to the IRS yourself or through an e-file provider.
