Approvals Feature

Also, I was reading about the Approvals feature in the January updates -- that is only for backend workflow, correct? That would not change/fix this issue for us, would it?

I'm not sure if you implemented the workflow accordingly but if so and it still doesn't there might be some factors that prevent it.
