FAQ
What is Form 1099-INT used for?
Form 1099-INT, Interest Income, reports interest paid to a person or business during the calendar year. Banks, credit unions, brokerages, and other payers issue it, and recipients use it to report interest income on their tax returns.
Who needs to file Form 1099-INT?
Generally, you file Form 1099-INT for each person you paid at least $10 in interest during the year, and for anyone you withheld federal income tax from under the backup withholding rules. Some payments have different thresholds or exceptions, so check the current Instructions for Forms 1099-INT and 1099-OID.
When is Form 1099-INT due?
Recipients generally need their copy by January 31. The IRS copy is usually due by the end of February if you file on paper or by March 31 if you e-file. Deadlines move when they fall on a weekend or holiday, so confirm the current year's dates in the instructions.
Can I file a printed Copy A with the IRS?
Paper filings of Copy A need the official scannable red form, so a Copy A printed from a PDF can't be filed with the IRS. You can print Copy B and the other black copies to give to recipients. Depending on how many information returns you have, you may also be required to e-file.
How do I fill out Form 1099-INT?
Start with the payer's name, address, phone number, and TIN, then the recipient's TIN, name, address, and account number if there is one. Box 1 reports taxable interest that isn't included in box 3, while box 3 is for interest on U.S. Savings Bonds and Treasury obligations.
Fill in any other boxes that apply, such as box 2 for early withdrawal penalties, box 4 for federal income tax withheld, box 8 for tax-exempt interest, and boxes 11 through 13 for bond premium. Leave the boxes that don't apply blank.
