FAQ
What is Form W-7 used for?
Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is how you request an ITIN. An ITIN is a nine-digit tax processing number the IRS issues to people who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number but aren't eligible for a Social Security number.
You also use Form W-7 to renew an ITIN that has expired or is about to expire.
Who needs to file a W-7?
Common applicants include nonresident aliens who must file a U.S. tax return or claim a tax treaty benefit, resident aliens without an SSN, and spouses or dependents of U.S. citizens, resident aliens or visa holders. Nonresident students, professors and researchers may also need one.
If you're eligible for a Social Security number, you should apply for that instead of an ITIN.
Where do I send Form W-7?
In most cases, you attach Form W-7 to your federal tax return and mail it, along with your identification documents, to the IRS ITIN Operation address listed in the instructions. You can also apply in person at certain IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers or through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent.
Some applicants qualify for an exception that lets them apply without a tax return. Check the current Form W-7 instructions to see if one applies to you.
What documents do I need with my W-7?
You need documents that prove your identity and foreign status, either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. A valid passport is the only document that proves both on its own. Without a passport, you'll need a combination of other accepted documents, such as a national ID card or birth certificate.
The IRS instructions list every accepted document and any extra requirements for dependents.
How do I fill out Form W-7?
Start by checking whether you're applying for a new ITIN or renewing one, then select the box that explains why you need it. Next, enter your name, name at birth if different, mailing address and foreign address. After that, fill in your birth date, country of birth, citizenship, foreign tax ID and U.S. visa details if you have them.
Then describe the identification documents you're submitting, note any previous ITIN or IRS number, and sign and date the form.
Is it free to fill out Form W-7 with Jotform?
Yes. You can fill out Form W-7 online and download the completed PDF at no cost. Jotform doesn't file anything with the IRS for you, so you'll still need to print, sign and send the form with your documents.
