How does accepting payment work when a customer is subscribing for a monthly payment

I'm making a payment form for my client that wants to charge customer for monthly payment for subscribing to the website I'm making for them. When they subscribe do I have to input a credit card payment or how this work? I'm new to this and I really need help with this
