how can I use a form to create a pdf. We have a document that is basic information for a home energy audit. I want to fill out a form which we collect a large number of fields and then merge it with the template document to complete a final report that is in a PDF as a complete document. We want the document to be a fillable PDF document so when emailed to the client, they can fill it out.

    Hi Halbeisen,

Thanks for reaching out to Jotform Support. It's easy to create a PDF version of your form. Let me show you how:

    1. On your My Forms page, hover your mouse over the form you want to edit.
    2. Left-click on More and then under the Data column, click on Open PDF Editor.
    3. When you open the PDF, a popup window will come up, like you see below. If you click on the Yes, Proceed button, the file will update automatically:

You can always update the PDF file manually. Here’s how to do it:

    • Click on the Add Element menu on the left side of the page.
    • Add the fields in the current form from the Form Fields tab.

You can also create the PDF file in a new tab. The new file will include all of the fields on the current form automatically. It's easy to set up. Let's do it:

    • Click on the New PDF button and choose a file type.
    • Name the new file as you want and choose a layout.
    • Now, just click on Create. That’s it.

However, if you're referring to creating a form from an Original PDF, you might consider using Smart PDF. Let me show you how:

    • Click the Create Form button on your My Forms page.
    • Choose Import Form and then Import PDF Form.
    • Now, upload your PDF file.

    • Add the necessary fields and customize them using the Add Form Element menu on the left side of the page.

Sometimes, the fields that are automatically created in the PDF file will be in the wrong place. If that happens, you'll have to move and resize the fields. Check out the screencast below to see how to do that:

Another alternative is to use Jotform Sign and map your fields. It’s easy to create a Signable Document. Let me show you how:

    1. Go to your My Documents page and click on Create Sign Document.
    2. Now, you can upload your own document, or you can use the Demo Document to test it out.
    3. Then, you can add more documents, or you can just continue by clicking on the Create Signable Document button.
    4. That will redirect you to the Sign Builder page.

After creating your document, you can let the system detect fields automatically by clicking on the Detect Fields button, or you can manually match your fields with elements by dismissing the pop-up message.

If that's not exactly what you're referring to, can we ask for more information so we can better understand the requirement?

After we hear back from you, we’ll have a better idea of what’s going on and how to help.

    Hi Rex,

Thanks for getting back to us. Just so I understand, do you already have a form created, and you want a fillable PDF version of this form? Are you referring to the GGCI Energy Audit form? If so, I've checked your PDF Editor, and see that you already have a fillable PDF of this form. You can download it by clicking on the Download button near the top right:

Once downloaded, you can open the PDF on your computer or device and fill it out as needed:

As for having the fields merged with a template, we're not quite sure what you mean by this. Can you provide more details or perhaps a screenshot to help us understand better? This guide will show you how to post screenshots to the support thread.

Once we have a better idea of what’s going on, we’ll be able to come up with a solution.

    Here is the use case.

    1. we do online energy audits in a zoom setting. The customer needs to answer about 95 questions in a form or a fillable pdf. Once that data is collected, we want to merge it with 33 pages of a recommendations report and present 1 document in a pdf

    Hi Halbeisen,

Thanks for getting back to us. Unfortunately, this is not currently a direct available feature. As a workaround, you might be interested in sending the additional 33 pages separately by attaching it to the Autoresponder email that gets sent to the user after submission. Let me show you how:

    1. After creating your form, go back to Form Builder and click on the Settings tab in the orange navigation bar.
    2. Click on Emails in the menu on the left side of the page.
    3. Hover over the Autoresponder Email element and click on the Pencil icon.
    4. Click on the Advanced tab.
    5. Upload the file by selecting Upload File below Attach file.
    6. Now, just scroll down the page, click on Save, and you're done.

You also have the option to conditionally change the email sent based on the users answer. While the feature you’re looking for isn’t currently available, rest assured we’re always working to add new services and features to Jotform. I've gone ahead and escalated your request to our Developers. When or if it's implemented depends on their workload, how viable it is, and how many other users request it.

If there are any updates, we’ll circle back to this thread and let you know.
