How to Enable IPN for Paypal

  1. IPN (Instant Payment Notification) is a POST message sent by Paypal (for regular merchant accounts) whenever a transaction is completed on their side. This message contains all the data regarding the payment transaction completed by a form user. Go to our Incomplete Payments FAQ for more information.

    1. 1. Log on to your Paypal account 

    2. 2. Click Profile under the My Account tab.



        1. 3. Click My selling tools. Click "Update" in the Instant payment notifications section


        2. 4. Click Choose IPN Settings to specify your listener's URL and activate the listener.



        1. 5. The following screen appears. Specify the Default URL for your listener in the Notification URL field. If you're not using IPN outside of JotForm, you may use  https://ipn.jotform.com/ipns/paypal.php 

        2. Note: The default notification URL does not matter. JotForm just needs IPN to be enabled.


          6. Choose Receive IPN messages (Enabled) to enable your listener.

          7. Click Save.The following screen appears: 


            1. 8. Click Back to Profile Summary to return to the Profile after activating your listener.You also can click Edit settings to modify your notification URL or disable your listener. You can click Turn Off IPN to reset your IPN preferences.

    Hi, we are bit confused with this IPN setting. You didn't have it before and now we have to change something here. I visited my Paypal account and I believe activated the PIN as you unstructed above. However, the site is not showing the function correctly. Please support us ASAP.

    ...Cancel that last comment. Found it but it's not under a column of any kind.
    Go to: Profile>My Selling Tools>Getting paid and managing my risk (from main options). You will then see the Instant Payment Notifications link to update the settings

    Dear Jotform....

    I went to update my payment form. I received this notice dated May 23 that I need to update this IPN. Why have my forms been working since this May 24? Please explain what this IPN is and why we are having to make this change. Advanced notice of this issue from Jot Form would be beneficial. I have multiple payment forms with my clients and I don't want them to call me with a problem due to my systems inability to process their payments. Do I have to update every payment form today? The WHY to me is more important than "you need to this to make your forms work" approach... I found out about this when updating a form. E-mail us with the notice or something a little more proactive and less stressful for Jotform customers. Frankly, now I am concerned that all my payments forms are no longer functioning.

    I am receiving this error message for my clients - "DPRP has been disable for this merchant". What does this mean? I pasted the general URL because we are not using IPN outside of Jotform - https://www.jotform.com/ipns/paypal.php.

    I cannot find the IPN notification under these instructions or in paypal's instructions. I get as far as "My Selling Tools" and there is NOTHING that says IPN. Very confused. Please assist. Thanks.

    Why do we need to do this when Jotform and PayPal send instant notification already? I don't know what any of this means, really, except that, as far as I know, I don't have an url to send anything to, and this will terminate my relationship with jotform.

    IPN. All you are missing is the "A" and you can speel out the word "PAIN". Which is exactly what this is. What is the reason this new procedure must be used?

    Hey so not sure what to enter as notification url, going by the above I used https://www.jotform.com/ipns/paypal.php but they sent me this response:
    Hello eoghan o kelly,

    Please check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notification (IPN) messages. Messages sent to the following URL(s) are not being received:

    https://www.jotform.com/ipns/paypal.php

    If you do not recognize this URL, you may be using a service provider that is using IPN on your behalf. Please contact your service provider with the above information.

    Once you or your service provider fix this problem, you or your service provider can resend the failed messages from the IPN History page. If this problem continues, PayPal may disable the IPN feature for your account.

    Thank you for your prompt attention to this issue.

    I cannot get the PayPal sandbox to talk to my Listener. The Simulator seems to work, says "IPN Sent Successfully". My Listener shows response. To help diagnose I have reduced the listener to the code shown below. Should I expect to see the file "test.txt" updated?

    You must enter a properly formatted URL into the Notification URL field in order to activate Instant Payment Notification.
