Artist Statement
Rachel Rozanski is an interdisciplinary artist and PhD student whose creative research explores concepts of restoration and repair in environmental studies and disability studies. Through residency projects in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Iceland, she has collaborated with researchers and been inspired by scientific and land-based studies of permafrost degradation, pollution and adaptations for the Anthropocene. Using drawing, photography and video, Rachel portrays the creative survival of people, plants and animals in sick bodies and sick Lands, creating documentary art that is accessible and experiential. Her work has been exhibited in galleries internationally and across Canada including PAVED arts, Prefix Circuit Gallery, Two Rivers Gallery, the Canada Council for the Arts Ajagemo gallery, and Artspace Gallery for CONTACT Photography Festival.
Proposal
During this residency, I plan to explore the
study and map the travel and origins of mater
ials that make their way to Rabbit Island- tr
acing their transformation and breakdown from
massive geological or synthetic bodies into
waterways. I will do this through video and a
lternative photography. My research crosses o
ver between art and science in order to make
research accessible and experiential. I am cu
rrently conducting fieldwork with Geologist P
atricia Corcoran and the Synthetic Collective
, working together to sample, map, and visual
ize the complexities of micro-plastics pollut
ion in sites undergoing “naturalization” arou
nd Lake Ontario. I hope to show the footprint
s and histories of these materials, but I hop
e to provide a layer of visual evidence that'
s accessible but also experiential, translati
ng scientific concepts and earthly urgencies.
I consider all of my work to be documentary i
n nature, spanning across mediums including d
rawing, alternative photography, video, and v
irtual videoscapes. I consciously both challe
nge and reference traditions within documenta
ry media and scientific illustration.
My work is about land and environment, but al
so unavoidably about access as clean water, a
ir, and other basic needs become increasingly
inaccessible, and at some point, disabling.
Many of my creative interests stem from my ex
perience growing up in a remote island commun
ity as a chronically ill and disabled person,
and later living in the Arctic and facing ch
allenges around access. Although the processe
s of “healing” human bodies and “restoring” s
ick lands are vastly different, they are enac
ted through similar cultural fantasies of res
toration that aim to reinstate land and bodie
s to a particular picture of health.
