You can that, the cancel the subscription right away to avoid automatic renewals. The account will remain on paid status for the month you paid for.

The account will go back to free when the period expires. For example if you purchase the monthly plan today, cancel it. The account will be on paid status, until April 10, next month, and you will avoid the automatic renewal next month.
