SMTP is not sending autoresponse

The auto responder has been functioning inconsistently. I have set up smtp
details of google twice. But sometimes it sends auto response and sometimes
it doesn't. I can reset the smtp again. But i guess there is a limit yo
how many times i can set it . plus its a great hassle.
