Can I pre-authorize a credit card without knowing the amount to charge?

    Hello,

I work for a seafood market and we are creating a online form for home deliveries. We want to be able to take payment information online and pre-authorize either a set percentage over the total or a set dollar amount over the total (more ideal). This is because if the customer is not home we will charge $5.00 for a cooler. We also offer pricing by the pound on all of our items such as salmon, shrimp, etc. and we need to be able to charge more or less depending on what the exact weight is. If someone asks for 1.5 pounds of mahi and it comes out to 1.6 we want to be able to charge them correctly.

I know that you offer a authorize-only option for authorize.net (our payment gateway) but how do i make sure it is authorizing for more than the total? The only think i can think of is to make a product item for 10-20$ and make it required and pre-selected for a certain amount and when it authorizes the total we can always go down when we are closing the transactions on our end? Ideally i would not like to do that option if i don't have to because customers might get confused why their total is off but it is the only way i can think to force it.

    Hi there!

Unfortunately, there is no way to take credit card information and change the amount later.

If you require payment authorization, that can be done through multiple payment integrations:

However, it would still require either setting up a custom amount to authorize or specific products.
