How can I tally responses from within a single question?

Asked by JoshAtJ on December 17, 2014 at 02:44 PM

I have a survey in which respondents check off a variety of checkboxes indicating their interest in various topics. I want to tally all the responses so that I know how many times a given checkbox was clicked. Thus, from "pick any food topics you want to report on" in a hypothetical survey question, I want to know how many people picked "lollipops," how many picked "marshmallows," how many picked "sandwiches," etc.

Why is this so vexingly difficult to do?
