Setting preference to clear fields on hide causes form to freeze

I need to ensure that fields when hidden are cleared (or set to NULL). However when I set the preferences to ensure that fields are cleared when hidden it causes my form to hang. Switching it back to clear on submit, and the form loads fine again.
