Is there a way that hidden form items will also be hidden when users edit their own submissions?

I have a form that I keep over the length of a school year, and hide options as they become outdated. But when a user edits their previous submission, they see all of the outdated items that I have hidden. I'd prefer not to delete them because I want to keep the data. Is there a way I can have it both ways?
