Is there a simple direct debit the customer can complete for monthly payments sent to my paypal account

Yes, you can actually sell suscriptions. With suscriptions you can set up the recurring time that you want your customers to pay. It can be monthly, once a year, once each three months, it can be any time frame that you would like to use.
