I would think this would be immediate, but I have tried sending forms by email to myself to test and still nothing has come though thirty minutes later. I have also recently had a client say she didn't receive the email at all and had to resend it. I don't want to lose clients because of this.

The email notification or autoresponder should be immediate.
You can check in your account E-mail History logs for the the status of the sent emails.
If the email address is bounce listed, you can also unblock it. Check this user guide
