In e-commerce, urgency moves product.
A ticking clock on a product page or announcement bar gives shoppers a concrete and compelling reason to act now instead of coming back later… or never.
Whether you’re running a Shopify flash sale timer for Black Friday, dropping a limited product, or running a holiday campaign, a countdown timer is one of the simplest and most effective conversion tools you can add to your store.
Shopify’s default themes don’t include a built-in countdown block, but there are three solid ways to add one:
- Installing a third-party app from the Shopify App Store
- Embedding a free custom widget
- Upgrading to a premium theme
Each of these approaches will get you there. The right choice depends on how much you want to spend and how lightweight you want to keep your storefront. In this blog post, we explain all three options, with step-by-step instructions and details on the best option for you.
Option 1: Install a Shopify App Store extension
When most merchants selling on Shopify want to add a timer, the Shopify App Store is the first place they look. Apps like Hextom Countdown Timer Bar and Essential Countdown Timer Bar are popular picks. Both are no-code, quick to set up, and don’t require a developer.
The trade-off is cost and performance.
While most apps offer a free plan, you may need to upgrade to unlock additional views, features, or multiple timers, and that upgrade can run you an additional $5–$15 per month on average. Hextom’s paid plan, for example, starts at $9.99 per month, and Essential Countdown plans start at $6.99 per month.
Stacking multiple third-party apps is also one of the most reliable ways to slow down your Shopify store, and a slower storefront means lower conversion rates. That’s the exact opposite of what a timer is supposed to deliver.
How to get started with an app
- Go to the Shopify App Store and search for a countdown timer app.
- Click Install and follow the installation prompts to connect it to your store.
- From the app dashboard, select Create widget and configure your timer type and settings: end date, display pages, and design. When it’s ready to go, toggle the button on the right side.
Option 2: Use a free embeddable countdown widget (recommended)
If you want to add urgency to your Shopify product page without paying a monthly fee or slowing down your store, the better path is a free HTML embed. It keeps your storefront lightweight, protects your margins, and gives you full control over the design.
Our Jotform Countdown Timer Widget does exactly this. It’s part of our collection of free website widgets, all of which are available with no subscription required.
You can customize the colors, font, and layout to match your brand, then embed the countdown in Shopify using the native Custom Liquid or Custom HTML block that’s built into every Shopify theme editor.
This is our recommended method for merchants who want a reliable, free Shopify countdown timer that won’t add bloat to your site or a recurring line item to your budget.
How to set it up
- Visit the Jotform Countdown Timer Widget page to customize your timer. Set your target date and time, choose your colors, and preview the design (you can preview for both desktop and mobile). Click Continue and choose your layout settings. When you’re happy with the preview, click Try it on your website for free and copy the embed code.
- In your Shopify account, navigate to Online Store, click Edit Theme, and open the page where you want the timer to appear. Add a Custom Liquid or Custom HTML block to the section where you want it — above the Add to Cart button on a product page, for example, or in your announcement bar.
- Paste the embed code into the block and hit Save. That’s it. Your Custom HTML countdown is live and ticking in Shopify!
Pro Tip
The Jotform Countdown Timer widget works on any page in your store: product pages, your homepage, a dedicated landing page for a campaign. Try placing it above the fold on your highest-traffic product page first, then expand from there.
Option 3: Upgrade to a premium Shopify theme
Some merchants prefer to bake features directly into the theme rather than use third-party embeds. Many paid themes in the Shopify theme store include a countdown timer section in the theme editor, ready to configure without any additional tools.
This is a good fit if you’re already planning a full store redesign (or you already own a premium theme that includes a countdown timer section). If a timer is the only feature you need, though, a premium theme purchase can be a significant investment for a single element that you can also get for free (premium themes range from $100 to $350-plus on average, paid as a one-time fee).
How to activate a timer in a premium Shopify theme
- In your Shopify account, go to Online Store and click Visit Theme Store to browse paid options. Filter by Countdown timer under features or search for themes that list countdown timers in their feature set.
- After purchasing and installing your chosen theme, click Edit Theme to open the theme editor. Locate the countdown section; it’s usually listed in the sidebar as a standalone section you can drag to any page template.
- Configure the end date and time, update the display copy, then save and publish.
Enhance your Shopify store with free, no-code widgets
Incurring a monthly subscription fee for every feature you add to your store can quickly become a serious overhead problem, especially for drop shippers and smaller merchants where margins are already tight.
The Jotform Countdown Widget gives you a proven urgency tool for free, with no recurring fees and no performance hit to your storefront.
The countdown widget is just one piece of a much larger toolkit, though. Our free Jotform Website Widgets directory includes 150-plus widgets to help you make quick work of adding everything from a social feed to customer reviews to forms to your storefront.
Here are a few worth exploring for your Shopify store:
- Banner Widget: Add a customizable announcement bar for promotions, sales, and seasonal campaigns directly above your store content.
- Review Widgets: Pull in customer feedback from Google, Facebook, Etsy, eBay, and more.
- E-Commerce Widgets: Browse the full e-commerce category for additional tools built around product display, pricing, promotions, and conversion.
All of these widgets follow the same embed process as the Countdown Timer widget: Simply copy the code, paste it into a Custom HTML block, and you’re done.
